Open For Business

For the past few weeks, I’ve had this calling in my head to open my own Etsy shop, as I have found a gap in the market in Pagan based matters. Every time I apply to a place to live I keep hearing the same rhetoric – “your income levels aren’t enough”, and I’m sick of waiting to have a place of my own to open up shop. At this point, I really think I need to open my own business first since I need more money to get a place, and the added income would make a huge difference. I think I’m just going to get a second storage unit for making my products out of, market, sell, and use that to be my second source of income to get me through this. I’ve been sitting on $500 for the cost of supplies and a website to bet me going, but I’d also need a PO Box too, however it should be worth it. I don’t want to say what it is over public forums just yet as others may be inclined to take my idea, and I really believe this is MY calling, leading to a potential 503C for a coven to help the community. People I’ve talked to think it’s an excellent idea, and I’m hoping it works out.

Next week I only work 2 days, and after talking to my sons PT I’ve canceled his surgery for his own emotional health at this time, as the school and myself have all had concerns expressed. With this time I’ll need to do the following:

Week 1

  • Look into how to register my business name with the state
  • Order glass for containers and find a way to print labels
  • Start the business blog (as it’s recommended for Etsy success by professionals who are successful on the site
  • Get a 2nd storage unit
  • Get a table and chair to work with
  • Ask Sarah how much product pictures would cost to market with, as professional product portraits are also the backbone of Etsy success
  • Set up my Square to run card transations on my phone

Once thats all finalized, I’m hoping supplies will be in, and the benefit is I’ll have aplace to practice my witchcraft (short of lighting candles and burning things). This will lead to the next phase:

Week 2

  • Create product & enchant it
  • Take pictures
  • Post online to Etsy, facebook, twitter, the shop blog

At this point, I think it’s a pretty solid plan and I have a book of shadows and a journal that I’ve been using for research, recipes, ideas, and more. I will slowly start expanding it from there, but the main line is what I need to get up and running. This means more picture taking & Leane agreed to model for me, so I’m pretty stoked. I’ve been bulking up on herbs and other supplies to get me started, so where I’m 1/3 of the way there, why bother turning back. Who knows, it may even be a “rags to riches” story, but where this is for a very specific market, who knows. Google analytics should hopefully help with advertising, and I should probably open a second checking account for business purchases only, or a separate bank account altogether as to keep things better organized with the square space. Once it becomes more successful I can look into an accountant, pay off my other 2 debts, and open up shop. It’s a risk, but where I’m homeless I have nothing left to lose. I’m also on a few pagan business owner groups on facebook, so I have a small community to draw from. There’s a lot of potential to this, and I believe enough in the product to make this work. I need to see how much it would be to get a booth and stuff as well for renaissance fairs in the summer and psychic fairs.

May the Goddess see me through on this.
